Tesla Cybertruck’s Abilities Are Lower Than Expected

Reception of the Cybertruck has been mixed since it was first announced in 2019.

The Tesla Cybertruck has been one of their most anticipated projects since it was first announced in November 2019. Deliveries of the first round of trucks is expected to begin this week, with the first trucks set to be delivered on November 30th, four years after the announcement. So far with the previews, we have already seen a few ways in which the truck does not live up to the originally advertised hype.

Tesla claimed the Cybertruck will be able to tow up to 14,000 pounds, but that is not the reality.

The Tesla Cybertruck’s makers are now reporting that the vehicle has a maximum towing capacity of 11,000 pounds. This means the actual maximum towing capacity is 3,000 pounds less than what was originally advertised.

The real numbers of the truck’s towing capabilities have been on display on signs at Tesla stores that have a model of the truck on display. Aside from these advertisements, Tesla has not made any direct report of the difference of towing weights. Pictures of these signs have circulated around X (formerly known as Twitter, and funnily enough also owned by Elon Musk). The pictures have also made their way to the “Cybertruck Owners Club” forum.

With the maximum towing weight at 11,000, the Cybertruck falls on the lower end compared to other in-production trucks.

The Cybertruck does beat the current Ford F-150 Lightning, which has a towing ability of 10,000 pounds. Tesla’s truck is neck and neck with Rivian’s R1T, which can tow up to 11,000. However, the Chevy 2024 Silverado EV, with one model pulling up to 10,000, has a model reported to tow up to 20,000. Furthermore, Ram’s widely anticipated REV 1500 can tow up to 14,000, like the Cybertruck was originally advertised to do. This is to say that, while the Cybertruck does not have the lowest towing abilities, it also does not have the highest.

The maximum towing capacity weight is not the only number that is lower than first promised. The Tesla Cybertruck also claimed that it would be able to carry a maximum payload capacity of 3,500 pounds. The actual number is just 2,500 pounds. This number is still higher than most other rival trucks.

While the statistics are different than they were first suggested to be for Tesla’s Cybertruck, we will not be able to know for sure how it operates until the official deliveries begin.
