We are officially less than one month away from spring. That means we are starting the transition to more daylight and warmer weather. However, as the season changes, so does the way we drive and deal with the road. Here are all the things you need to remember about driving in spring and all the best tips to keep safe while on the road.
Beware of Potholes
In the winter, roads erode a lot more often. This creates potholes which can hide in the winter due to snow and other road covers. However, in the spring, they become a lot more visible and can create major problems. Be aware that you will likely be seeing more potholes popping up than you have been seeing. Road services will likely start to repair them once the weather permits it, but for now, expect to see potholes on the road. When you do, go around the hole if you can. If you cannot, slow down. When you drive over the hole, release your brakes. This helps to reduce the impact.
Watch Your Tire Pressure
Cold weather often affects tire pressure. It creates lower pressure and can easily set off your tire pressure light. If you see this happen, just refill your tire and you are good to go. This may happen a few times due to the back and forth temperatures of spring.
Beware of Sun Glare
With daylight hours extending, the sun will have brighter beams more often. This can create sun glare, especially in the hours of sunrise and sunset. Be prepared for sun glare by keeping a pair of sunglasses on you or in your car.
Expect More Animals
The nicer weather will bring a lot of animals back out into the world. They may want to go exploring, and with that, get onto the road. Be aware of increased animal activity and stay alert when on the road. The most important time to stay alert is around dawn and dusk. If you see an animal in the road, do not panic. Slow down and it will hopefully cross in time. If you need to and it is safe to do so, you can also stop or go around the animal.
Prepare for Spring Showers
They do not have the phrase “April showers bring May flowers” for nothing. Spring will continue to be a rainy season. Be sure your windshield wipers are in good condition ahead of the season taking over. Furthermore, drive carefully and cautiously when driving in the rain. Slow down and give more space between you and the car in front of you. Also, remember that wet roads become reflective, which can worsen sun glare. Heed with extreme caution when necessary.
